What Affects the Cost of Snow Removal in York Region?

Short answer: Snow removal pricing depends on driveway size and shape, walkways and steps included, the trigger depth, windrow clearing, salting, how early you need it done, and whether you choose a seasonal plan or per-visit service. Compare quotes line by line, not by the total alone.

The factors

Driveway size and shape

A double driveway in a Markham subdivision plows quickly. Long, sloped or curved driveways in Kleinburg or Oak Ridges take longer and may need more hand work.

Walkways, steps and paths

Anything a plow cannot reach is cleared by hand and adds time per visit.

Trigger depth

Clearing after every snowfall costs more over a season than clearing once snow passes a few centimetres.

Windrow clearing

Return visits to clear the ridge left by the city plow add value and cost.

Salting

Automatic salting with each visit, or salting on request after freezing rain.

Timing

Early-morning clearing for commuters needs tighter routes.

Seasonal or per visit

A seasonal plan fixes the scope for the whole winter. Per-visit pricing depends on each storm.

How to compare quotes

• Is the windrow included?
• Are walkways and steps included?
• What is the trigger depth?
• Is salting included or extra?
• What happens in a long storm or freezing rain?

Commercial pricing

Parking lots are priced on lot size, stalls, entrances, loading areas, salting scope and service windows. See commercial snow removal.

Questions homeowners ask

Why do quotes vary so much?

Because they include different things. Line up the scope before comparing prices.

Is a cheap quote a red flag?

Not always, but check the route size and what happens in a big storm.

Do you charge extra for big storms?

That depends on the plan and is set out in writing in your quote.
